Are You Aging Too Fast?

Self-tests are an easy way to help determine your functional age, a measurement of how a person actually functions, rather than how many years he/she has been alive.

Elasticity test. This measures the degree of deterioration of the connective tissue under the skin, a sign of aging.

Pinch the skin on the back of your hand between your thumb and forefinger for five seconds, then time how long it takes to flatten out completely.

Up to age 50, it will take about five seconds ... by age 60, the average time is 10 to 15 seconds ...by age 70, the typical time will be 35 to 55 seconds.

Static balance test. How long can you stand on one leg with your eyes closed before falling over?

Perform this test either barefoot or wearing low-heeled shoes. Stand on a hard surface (not a rug) with both feet together and close your eyes. Lift your foot six inches off the ground, bending your knee at about a 45degree angle. (If you're right-handed, stand on your left leg. Left-handers should stand on the right leg.) Have a friend close by to catch you in case you fall. Do the test three times, and calculate the average.

On average, a 100% decline occurs From age 20 to age 80. Most young people are able to stand 30 seconds or more. Few older people will he able to hold the pose longer than a few seconds.

If your self-test results do not fall within the normal range for your age, consult your doctor for specific advice on how to minimize the effects of aging.
